Editor’s Note: J. C. Calhoun, the secretary of war in 1823, ordered an expedition to the headwaters of the St. Peter’s River which today is known as the Minnesota River. Major Stephen Long was the commander of the expedition which took the group to Big Stone Lake and Lake Traverse.
