LIKE SENTINALS, parking meters once lined Milbank’s Main Street. Installed in the 1950s to ease parking conjestion in the downtown area, the meters genterated revenue for the city and encouraged shoppers to limit the amount of time spent parked in one place. After the city added public parking lots near Main Street the town’s leadership gradually reduced reliance on the meters, and then, in 1980 voted to remove them.
