Watch or Join Youth as They Walk, Bike, Roll to School
Members of Milbank’s Parents Promoting Education group (PPE), along with the staff and administration of Milbank Elementary School, encourage all area residents to help the youth celebrate the annual Walk, Bike and Roll to School movement.
The national Walk, Bike and Roll to School day will be Wednesday, October 7. As a special treat, Dave Graf, elementary principal, will walk with students from Hurley Park to Milbank Elementary School. Resource officer Jake Folk will also be joining them. It’s possible that Tuffy, the school mascot, will make an appearance.
Organizers report that this community will be celebrating the entire week, beginning Monday, October 5.
The entire Milbank community can join in, as many people could walk, bike or roll to work that week as well. If that doesn’t work for individuals, perhaps they could create healthier alternatives like parking farther away to get in some extra steps or spend time outside walking around their yard or neighborhood.
Students will be encouraged to walk, bike or roll to school that week. Sheets to record their outside activity will be sent home so parents and guardians can report the children’s activity that week. Those who get their sheets filled out and signed by a parent will have their names entered in a raffle for a variety of prizes.
Organizers also ask the community to take note of that week as more kids may be out on the sidewalks and roads. They want the public to be safer around our children especially in school zones.
The national Walk, Bike and Roll to School day encourages healthier lifestyle choices, builds connection within the community, and promotes the need for policy and pathways that make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
