Pheasants Forever Kicks Off Annual Banded Bird Contest
In preparation for the pheasant hunting season in Grant County, members of the local Pheasants Forever group have banded and released a group of the game birds on public walk-in hunting areas and South Dakota game production areas within 12 miles of Milbank.
When hunters harvest birds with the special leg bands, they are to take the bands to Agtegra in Milbank for verification. At that point, the hunters will win instant prizes. Their names will also be entered into the end-of-the-season grand prize drawing for a 12-gauge shotgun.
This year, the pheasant hunting season begins with the South Dakota youth season from Saturday, September 26 to Sunday, October 4. The South Dakota resident-only season is Saturday through Monday, October 10 to 12, and the traditional season runs Saturday, October 17 through Sunday, January, 31, 2027.
The banded bird contest is open to any properly licensed hunter. All bands must be verified by January 31, 2027 to qualify for the contest.
