County Library Sets Coin Collecting Presentation
The public is invited to an informational coin collecting presentation to be held at the Grant County Public Library on Thursday, April 10. Two sessions will be offered, one at 2 p.m. and one at 6:30 p.m.
Les Olive, of Brookings, will be the guest presenter. He has been a coin collector since the 1960s and owns a comprehensive collection of United States coinage dating from 1797 to present day. Olive regularly attends coin shows and coin auctions. He has experience as a presenter on coin collecting with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
Participants will learn about the denominations, engravers, and designs of coins minted since the late 1700s. They will learn about what makes coins valuable to collectors and see examples of historic coinage of the United States.
Participants will learn about how the monetary system was established and how the U.S. Mint began. Attendees will learn about possible avenues for accumulating or divesting a collection.
This session will be a great opportunity for area coin collectors to inquire about or show special coins participants have collected. Attendees are encouraged to bring examples of a collection for show and tell.
There is no cost to attend. Registration is appreciated but not necessary.
