Residents Reminded: Check Sewer Vents, Detectors
The recent extremely low temperatures for an extended period of time has prompted Kevin Schuelke, Grant County emergency management director, to remind residents to check their sewer vents.
“As cold temps have been here for a few days now, we recommend checking your sewer vents for ice buildup,” Schuelke advised. “Also, keep drain traps full to prevent sewer gases from entering homes.”
Additional safety tips from Schuelke include check heating sources and combustion appliances to help prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. “Make sure outside vents are clear, with no blockages, and be sure exhaust piping is sealed and cannot leak into home. Make sure furnaces are running efficiently, meaning not rich or sooty,” he explained. He also recommends that families install carbon monoxide detectors or replace them if they are more than 10 years old.
