Local Retailers Celebrate Firms’ Independent Status
After celebrating the nation’s Independence Day, the local business owners are joining other entrepreneurs across the country in celebrating July as Independent Retailers Month.
To celebrate Independent Retailer Month, a dozen local businesses are advertising on a special page in this issue. They are Valley Liquor, Dakota Country Ag Services, Berens Market, Whetstone Home Center, Al’s Body Shop, Valley Queen Heritage Center and Cheese Store, The Flower Shoppe, Habanero’s, UPI, Milbank EyeCare Center, Dewey’s Lawn Care and Landscaping and Food-N-Fuel. Some are promoting their services and others have special offers or coupons for their customers.
Independent Retailer Month encourages consumers to shop local and celebrate indie retailers, creating more sustainable towns. The Grant County community is fortunate to have a great variety of independently-owned shops and eateries in addition to the many other businesses to create a well-rounded economic base.
The independent retailers are important to small communities because, according to South Dakota Rural Enterprise, Inc., “A dollar spent at an independent retailer is usually spent six to 15 times in the community before heading out of town. Just $1 can create $5 to $14 of value in the immediate area.”
A growing body of research is proving something that many people already know: small-scale, locally owned businesses create communities that are more prosperous, entrepreneurial, connected, and generally better off, reports the Institute for Local Self-Resilience. The organization also states on its website, “For every $10 million spent on Amazon it creates 14 jobs vs 57 jobs when $10 million is spend at independents.”
