Math Teacher Caitlyn Graf Earns Milbank Teacher of the Year Award
Caitlyn Graf was named Milbank’s teacher of the year during an assembly that filled the Milbank High School theatre with the full high school student body. The announcement of the honor and presentation the morning of Friday, February 10.
Dan Snaza, high school principal announced Graf as the winner and he and Justin Downes, superintendant, presented her with a bouquet.
Graf currently teaches math and coaches middle school girls basketball. A 2007 graduate of Milbank High School, Graf taught high school math in a shared position with Milbank and Wilmot from 2015 to 2017. She started full-time with the Milbank School District in 2017.
The award is initiated by nominations from the students and parents in the district. One student nominator wrote, “Mrs. Graf is an amazing person and she has very good morals. She does so much for us as students and I believe she is always encouraging us to do our best. She was the first teacher who told me that if I’m trying my best and I get a C as a grade it is perfectly fine. She encouraged me to try harder as a student and I will forever thank her for that.”
Another nominator commented, “Mrs. Graf is a helpful and caring teacher. She makes time for every student [who] asks for help. She’s also a very comforting teacher and makes sure that every student isn’t scared to get help and often finds a way to keep everyone interested, even the students [who] tend to slack off.”
As a local winner, Graf will advance to the regional teacher of the year competition. The regional winner will continue on to the state competition.
Graf is married to Jackson Graf, who also teaches math and coaches middle school boys basketball.
