County Library Launches Winter’s Hot Reads Program
The Grant County Public Library in Milbank is again sponsoring its Hot Reads for Cold Nights program to help patrons make great reading selections for the inevitable cold winter nights. The program will run through March 31, 2023.
Hot Reads For Cold Nights offers lists of great reading suggestions for books in six different age groups, from preschool to adults. The lists offer a wide range of book topics and styles and encourage readers to be adventurous and try something they may not normally read.
The books on the lists are displayed in the library. Each book comes with a bookmark ballot for the reader to give a star-rating vote for the material. The bookmark ballot is returned with the book and used to determine a Grant County Public Library Book of the Year at the conclusion of the program in each division.
A drawing will be conducted from the returned bookmark ballots at the conclusion of the program. A winner in each division will be awarded a cash card or certificate.
The list of books for adults was selected by the top 40 most often checked-out books since January of 2021. Avid readers can make sure they didn’t miss a great read, and novice readers will be led to titles already proven to be popular by local readers.
The high school and middle school lists each consist of nominees for South Dakota and Grant County Public Library books of the year. Teen service librarians choose South Dakota book of the year nominees around the state and Grant County nominees are chosen locally. Once again, the Grant County Public Library is offering the Grant County Teen Read Challenge, encouraging students to read the nominated books.
The younger divisions also have book lists from the South Dakota children’s book award committee. They include a Prairie Bud list for prekindergarten to first graders, a Prairie Bloom list for second and third graders, and a Prairie Pasque list for fourth and fifth graders. Grant County Public Library has also chosen some books to give local readers additional options for some great reading.
All votes placed for titles on the South Dakota book award lists will be placed at the state level to choose the South Dakota book of the year.
In addition to being available at the library, many of the titles from the Hot Reads for Cold Nights book lists are available digitally and offered free with the patron’s library card for device reading. All Grant County Public library card accounts can be managed from home via internet connection, including reserving materials and renewing materials.
Winning books in each division as well as the Hot Reads For Cold Nights prize winners will be announced on April 12, 2023.
