Food Giveaway Slated at
Living Word Church July 27
The third quarterly food giveaway of the year will be on Wednesday, July 27, at the parking lot of the Living Word Lutheran Church, north on Highway 15 in Milbank. Previous events were also conducted at Living Word.
The July 27 food giveaway begins at 4 p.m. and will feature pre-boxed food from Feeding South Dakota with cooperation from the Grant County Christian Service Council. There is no requirement to receive the food, but Feeding South Dakota requires workers to collect household information from each family receiving the food. Therefore, workers will ask recipients how many people in the family are ages 0-17, 18-59 and 60 and over.
Because of the close proximity to Highway 15, organizers ask that recipients arrive after 2:30 p.m. Volunteers will not be available to park vehicles until that time, and no one wants to create traffic hazards on the highway. Those wishing to pick up food boxes are asked to refrain from parking in the church parking lot until the volunteers are there at 2:30 p.m to give parking instructions.
Food recipients will enter the lot as instructed by the workers and will receive further traffic flow directions from there. Recipients are to simply open their trunks or back liftgates of their vehicles once they are in line, and volunteers will place the boxes in the vehicle. Organizers urge recipients to have space ready for the package to be set into the vehicle so the traffic flow will not be disrupted by needing additional time to make room.
“Please also note that we want to keep the line moving as quickly as possible, so we prefer if you are only picking up for your own family,” said Brenda Maass, an organizer. “However, we do understand that many people are willing to pick up food for others. If this is the case, please understand that there will be a two-family limit per vehicle. You will need to provide your name as well as the name of the other family you are picking up for when you get into the line.”
Those who need the free food, but cannot attend the day of the giveaway, will need to make arrangements for someone else to pick up their food, as the Christian Service Council members can no longer make deliveries after the event.
