Local Retailers Celebrate Firms’ Independent Status
Independent Retailer Month Continues with Local Specials
Entrepreneurs across the country are celebrating July as Independent Retailers Month, and Milbank’s business owners are joining in by offering specials to their customers.
To celebrate Independent Retailer Month, a dozen local businesses advertised in last week’s issue and this week, there’s another set of deals. Look inside for a page ad for information from Al’s Body Shop, Berens Market, Soft Water Plus, Valley Liquor, Milbank EyeCare Center, Dewey’s Lawn Care and Landscaping, Valley Queen, Back Door BBQ, Habanero’s Restaurant and Bar, UPI Petroleum, Milbank Collision and Dakota Country Ag Services. Some are promoting their services and others have special offers for their customers.
Independent Retailer Month encourages consumers to shop local and celebrate indie retailers, creating more sustainable towns. The Grant County community is fortunate to have a great variety of independently-owned shops in addition to the many other businesses to create a well-rounded economic base.
The independent retailers are important to small communities because, according to South Dakota Rural Enterprise, Inc., “A dollar spent at an independent retailer is usually spent six to fifteen times in the community before heading out of town. Just $1 can create $5 to $14 of value in the immediate area.”
A growing body of research is proving something that many people already know: small-scale, locally owned businesses create communities that are more prosperous, entrepreneurial, connected, and generally better off, reports the Institute for Local Self-Resilience. The organization also states on its website, “For every $10 million spent on Amazon it creates 14 jobs vs 57 jobs when $10 million is spend at independents.”
