Voters Head to Polls Tuesday For Primary Ballot, City Election
The South Dakota voters will head to the polls for the primary election on Tuesday, June 7. In addition, voters in Milbank’s ward two will vote for one of two candidates to represent them on the city council.
The Milbank city election includes two candidates to serve the ward two citizens on the city council. They are incumbent Scott Hoeke and challenger Craig Weinberg.
Grant County Republicans will have several choices on their primary ballot. For governor, they may vote for either incumbent Kristi Noem or challenger Steven Haugaard. In the race for United States Senator, they may vote for one of the following: incumbent John R. Thune, Bruce Whalen or Mark Mowry. Incumbent Dusty Johnson is challenged by Taffy Howard for the United States Representative seat.
Republican voters within South Dakota Legislative District Four can vote for two of the four candidates. They are incumbent Fred Deutsch and challengers Val Rausch, Adam Grimm and Stephanie Sauder.
Registered Democrats have no candidate races for which to cast votes. However, registered Democrats, Independents, “no party” affiliation and Republicans alike will have the opportunity to vote in favor or against Constitutional Amendment C. It is described as an amendment to require a three-fifths majority vote to pass ballot measures meeting certain requirements. Currently, the constitution requires that any new tax or tax increase must be approved by voters or by two-thirds of the members of each legislative branch. To be approved by voters, such a measure must obtain a majority of the votes cast. If the amendment passes, it would require that any initiated measure, proposed constitutional amendment or referred measure imposing or increasing taxes must obtain three-fifths of the votes cast to be approved. It also adds the requirement that any initiated measure, proposed constitutional amendment or referred measuring obligating the state to appropriate $10 million or more in any of the first five fiscal years must obtain three-fifths of the votes cast to be approved. It imposes the same three-fifths standard on any ballot measure that imposes or increases fees.
The polls are open on Tuesday, June 7, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents of all Milbank city wards and precincts vote at the Milbank Visitor Center community room, 1004 E. 4th Avenue.

• Grant Center Township, Whetstone Valley Electric Meeting Room, 1101 E 4th Ave., Milbank
• Melrose Township, Grant County Library, 207 E Park Ave., Milbank
• Mazeppa and Osceola Townships and Town of Marvin, Marvin Hall, 204 S. Church St., Marvin • Stockholm Town and Township, Community Center,400 E. Johnson, Stockholm
• Troy Township and Town of Strandburg, Rufer’s General Store, 123 S. Main St., Strandburg
• Twin Brooks Town and Township and Kilborn Township, Twin Brooks Community Center, 502 Lasell St., Twin Brooks
Absentee voting for the primary election began on April 22. In-person absentee voting happens at the Grant County courthouse during regular business hours, but closes on Monday, June 6, at 5 p.m.
Housebound county residents who wish to vote, should contact the auditor’s office to make arrangements prior to election day.
