Families Invited to Ice Fish During Free Step Outside Event

Families Invited to Ice Fish
During Free Step Outside Event
Through a cooperative effort between the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks staff and Schmidt’s Landing on Big Stone Lake, area families will be able to enjoy a free ice fishing opportunity on Sunday, February 28, beginning at 2 p.m.
“We’re trying to focus on families participating with this event; it’s a little different than the typical youth event we’ve done in the past,” commented Blake Swanson, wildlife conservation officer.
To help keep the event totally free for the families who want to get out on the ice and experience the wintertime activity, Schmidt’s Landing, located at 48140 Schmidts Road, Big Stone City, is granting free lake access to the participants that day.
Fishing equipment will be provided for those who do not have their own. The event will give the opportunity for families to fish in an Ice Castle, fish from a portable ice house, and learn how to clean and cook their own fish, according to Swanson. He also reminds participants to wear weather-appropriate attire.
In order for the sponsors to have enough equipment on hand for the step outside family ice fishing event, preregistration must be made by emailing blake.swanson@state.sd.us before February 26. He can be contacted for more information at that email or by calling 605.881.3779.
