Walk, Bike, Roll to School National Day Observed

Walk, Bike, Roll to School National Day Observed

The public is invited to join the students of Milbank Elementary School when they observe National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 12. Locally, the day is promoted by Parents Promoting Education (PPE).
The national effort promotes healthy lifestyles and focuses on wellness. Students will be walking and biking to school or utilizing other methods of transport, such as scooters and skateboards. Organizers ask that the public be aware of an increased number of children traveling to and from school that day on sidewalks and in crosswalks and hope the motorists will be extra careful while driving.
In addition to putting a spotlight on individual health and wellness, the national day is also used to promote safer walking paths and a generally healthier community.
As a final note, organizers say that walking, biking and rolling are not limited to the youth. They encourage adults in the community to consider leaving the car in the garage and walking or biking to work that day.
Originating as National Walk to School Day in 1997, events across the country raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events are promoted as building connections between families, schools and the broader community.
