Through the new groceries for veterans program, area veterans and the widows of veterans will be able to receive free food boxes on four opportunities this year. The program is possible through the combined efforts of several local veteran organizations.
The first opportunity for veterans to pick up a free food box, valued at about $50, will be on Tuesday, March 4, at Berens Market in Milbank. Volunteers from the veterans groups will have a distribution location inside the grocery store beginning at 8:30 a.m. Fifty boxes will be given on a first-come, first-served basis during the March 4 event.
To received the box with a combination of perishable and nonperishable grocery items, each veteran will need to show a Veterans Administration (VA) identification card, driver’s license with the word “veteran” listed on it or a DD214. Widows will need to show their spouse’s DD214. There is no income requirement or guideline for veterans to receive the groceries.
The groceries for veterans program was spearheaded by the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 19, of Milbank, and the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1054, of Watertown. It is also sponsored by the Birch-Miller American Legion Post #9, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chapter 3486 and Sons of the American Legion Squadron #9, all of Milbank.
The ownership of Berens Market is also assisting in providing a portion of the groceries. Milbank Transit will provide transportation for veterans who need that service to get to Berens on the day of the giveaway.
Organizers note that they plan to have free groceries for veterans again in October, November and December.
