Suicide Prevention Event Set to Increase Awareness

Suicide Prevention Event
Set to Increase Awareness
Area residents are invited to participate in the inaugural Whetstone SAFE suicide awareness event on Saturday, October 4, in Milbank. Event goers will come together at the A.B. Campbell Stadium in remembrance of those who’ve died as the result of suicide and those who battle suicidal ideation.
The event will start at 4 p.m. with a proclamation and welcome delivered by Pat Raffety, mayor. Area veterans will provide the color guard representation and the national anthem will be performed.
The featured activity will be a 2.2 mile run/walk commencing after the opening activities. Those planning to participate in the walk/run are asked to register beginning at 3:30 p.m.
“The length of the run/walk is to draw awareness to the number of daily veteran suicide rates, which was 22 at its highest rate,” explained Sarah Ward, one of the event organizers.
Whether participating or spectating, the public is invited to enjoy a free community meal at 5 p.m. The meal, including hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, chips, drinks and cookies, is sponsored by the Whetstone Sportsmen Conservation Club and served by members of the Milbank Kiwanis Club.
After the meal, at approximately 6 p.m., attendees will join for a candlelight remembrance ceremony as the names of individuals who have died by suicide are read in remembrance. Anyone who would like a name read during this time should message the Whetstone SAFE Facebook page or text or call 605-924-0977.
Other highlights include kids activities, such as face painting, coloring, a dragonfly craft and chalk the walk stations. Informational booths from various agencies, organizations and businesses will be found distributing information as well.
The event is hosted by members of Whetstone SAFE, South Dakota National Guard 740th Transportation Company and sponsored by the Whetstone Sportsmen Conservation Club and the Grant County Review.
