Police Warn of Counterfeit Cash

Police Warn of Counterfeit Cash

Officials with the Milbank Police Department (MPD) shared information from the Big Stone County MN sheriff’s office stating that on Tuesday, October 14, the neighboring law enforcement discovered counterfeit $50 bills circulating in the area.

MPD officers revealed on Friday, October 24, that a Milbank bank advised law enforcement that a counterfeit $50 bill was identified and others may be circulating in Milbank and surrounding areas.

Police offer suggestions for the public to attempt to ensure money is not counterfeit.

• Feel the paper – Genuine currency has a unique texture due its blend of materials. Counterfeit bills often feel slick or papery.

• Check the watermark – Hold the bill up to the light. A person should see a faint watermark that is a smaller version of the portrait on the bill.

• Counterfeit pen/marker – Use a counterfeit detecting pen or marker on the bill.

These are just a few suggestions to keep in mind when receiving any type of paper currency. If in doubt, call a local bank and their staff can help. If counterfeit money is detected, residents should contact the police department by calling 605-432-5650.
