Peever Celebrates 125 Years with Weekend Event
Peever, a small Roberts County town of about 150 residents, will celebrate its 125th anniversary on Friday and Saturday, August 7 and 8. Located about 27 miles northwest of Milbank, the community has planned two days of festivities honoring its rich history.
It was founded in 1901 by Tom Peever, who was born in 1862 in Canada. He came to the United States in 1881, then moved to Wilmot in 1892. Later, he became the president of the First State Bank of Peever. In 1900, Peever and business partners Harry Spackman and N.H. Miller platted the townsite, which was incorporated in 1901.
One of the highlights of the celebration will be the opening of the town’s time capsule on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The capsule was buried during Peever’s centennial celebration in 2001. Residents will get their first look at its contents after 25 years. Afterward, a Peever alumni meal will be served at 6 p.m., followed by a free outdoor movie.
A wide variety of events are planned for Saturday, August 8, beginning at 10 a.m. Free events include kids games, a parade, vendors, inflatables, live music in the park, a play, a fly over, a tractor pull, and more. Homemade pie and ice cream will be served in the afternoon for a free will donation.
At 1: 30 p.m. Peever’s grand marshal, Alan Jarman, will be honored. Alan is the husband of Char Jarman, who wrote the book Maggie, Women of Roberts County, passed in 2018, was the town pie lady and historian. One passage from her book still holds true today. “Ravaged by fires, floods, depression, and drought, it goes on. Smaller by far, but not beaten yet. Unlike Travare and many other ghost towns that dot the map of Roberts County, Peever, with determination of its citizens, will move into the new century with hope.”
Country bingo begins at 5 p.m.
The entry fees for bingo, horseshoes, and the cornhole tournaments will be returned as prizes.
The celebration will end Saturday night with a street dance beginning at 8 p.m. with music by My Monday Regret.
