October 4 is National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day
Milbank students will travel the city streets on foot or on bikes as they go to school on Wednesday, October 4, in observance of National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day. Parents Promoting Education (PPE), along with the Milbank Elementary School, will promote Walk, Bike and Roll to school day with the elementary students. The PPE members could use the entire community's help as the public is encouraged to join in. "We would like to encourage a healthier community," say the organizers. "We are hoping many people could walk, bike, or roll to work as well that week, especially on October 4. If that is not possible, we would ask them to park farther away to get in some steps or spend some time outside walking around their yard or neighborhood."
Kids will be encouraged to ride or walk that whole week and incentivized with prizes available at the end of the week. Students will get the option to spend some time outside before or after school to walk or ride their bikes at their leisure. After a parent/guardian signs their daily sheet, they will get their name put into a raffle for prizes that will be drawn later that week. Students who walk or ride to/from school on October 4 will get to put their name in a raffle for a special prize basket.
"We also ask the community to take note of this day as there will be more kids on the roads. Most importantly, we want the public to be safer around our children. We will have crosswalk guards on that day to help kids be safe entering the school zones," they report. High school students will be helping at some crosswalks while the police department will help on the highway. So please keep your eyes out for children when driving.
