New Indoor Soccer at Unity Kicked Off for Fun, Growth
The new six-week indoor soccer program at Unity Health and Fitness began on Thursday, January 12. Cody Pohlen, Unity’s recreation director, says the program’s inaugural season has been a success.
“It’s been good to see a sport that’s traditionally outside being played inside,” said Pohlen. “Kids loved it.”
Fifteen kids between first and fourth grades signed up for the program, with another dozen joining informally. “We just invited everybody we’ve seen,” Pohlen said. “We wanted as many kids as possible involved to help get the word out.”
Unity has also hosted an adult soccer night on Wednesdays. Pohlen says the program has been growing. As the weather warms, the program will stop having a set time and people can simply go outside.
Unity’s spring outdoor soccer program for ages five through 12 will begin on April 11 and run through May 11. Registration information for it and other programs organized through Unity is available in an ad elsewhere in this issue.
Pohlen is enthusiastic about the upcoming soccer season. While the indoor program’s focus was simple scrimmaging and getting kids introduced to soccer being fun, the spring program will have harder drills and more structure. Pohlen encourages parents or community members with interest in coaching teams to volunteer, either by signing up on a child’s registration slip or by contacting Unity.
Outdoor soccer will be at Hurley Park. Pohlen anticipates being on the new soccer fields at Lake Farley Park for the fall season.
