New Gardening Programs Begin at County Library
The Grant County Public Library’s new Gardening is a Party program will feature a series of sessions focused on local gardening and growing.
Spring sessions will focus on helping people get started gardening. Get Going – Get Growing will be conducted in the community room of the library at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 27. Cheryl Schweer will lead the session, focusing on starting, transplanting and caring for seedlings.
Attendees are encouraged to bring any extra seeds they may have saved for a seed swap. Library director Tammy Wollschlager notes that the library is also able to provide seeds to event attendees.
New gardeners will have another opportunity to learn at the library at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 25. The session will center on working with houseplants and include basic care, transplanting, division, starting new plants and planting bulbs.
Attendees are encouraged to register for events by stopping in at the library or calling (605) 432-6543.
“We hope to celebrate summer with additional summer-inspired Gardening is a Party themes including pruning, flower care and arranging before moving into fall themes such as harvesting and harvest sharing,” Wollschlager said.
Patrons with a library card may check out gardening tools, including hoes, rakes and shovels. Wollschlager notes that patrons may also check out specialty items like a Treadlite Broadfork, an Ames two-prong hoe, a three-tine cultivator and a ripper.
“The Treadlite Broadfork is meant to aerate and loosen soil without disturbing the worms, microorganisms and weed seeds or soil structure that provide important benefits to plants,” explained Wollschlager. “The two-prong hoe is designed to go around existing plants with ease. The three-tine cultivator is a favorite with three blades to break up the soil. The ripper penetrates the soil and turns in the earth to loosen soil.”
Library cards are free to anyone with a Grant County address.
