Milbank Police Remind Drivers: Stop for School Bus
Members of the Milbank Police Department issued a statement on Monday, March 30, reminding motorists that they must stop when approaching a school bus with red lights flashing.
“We are starting to see an increase in reports of motorists who are failing to stop when a school bus is stopped and is displaying red lights, as well as the stop arm extended,” said Jake Folk, school resource officer. “ We cannot understate the seriousness of this violation as it puts children getting on and off of the bus in great danger that is preventable.”
Citing the state law, Folk reminds drivers that, on a highway that has fewer than two lanes of travel in each direction, or on a private road, when approaching a school bus that has its amber warning lights flashing, they must reduce the speed to 15 miles per hour or less and proceed past the school bus with caution.
The operator of a vehicle approaching a school bus that has its red signal lights flashing must make a complete stop at least 15 feet from the school bus. The vehicle must remain stopped until the flashing red signal lights are extinguished.
