Hunters Can Win Prizes with Banded Pheasants

Hunters Can Win Prizes
with Banded Pheasants

When the youth pheasant hunting season begins on Saturday, September 25, local hunters should keep their eyes peeled for banded birds that will have been released in public walk-in hunting areas in Grant County. Through a joint effort by the members of  Grant County Pheasants Forever and the Milbank Area Chamber of Commerce, the annual banded bird contest will continue this season.
The Pheasants Forever members released an undisclosed number of banded birds into public hunting areas, and any hunter who bags one should take the bands from these birds to UPI Petroleum in Milbank to be verified and participate in the contest.
Each banded bird will be awarded an instant prize, and the participants’ names will be entered into an end-of-season drawing for a grand prize. The winner of the 2020 grand prize, a TriStar 12 gauge pump shotgun, was Emmett Hanson. Business owners who would like to contribute prizes may do so by contacting the chamber office.
Organizers indicate that the banded bird contest is a great way to encourage youth to be active in a lifetime sport and engage with the local businesses that sponsor the contest. While the organizers are targeting youth participants, when the regular season opens on October 9, any adults who shoot the banded birds may enter the contest as well.
Refer to South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks for complete licensing details and season dates.
