Fifth Grade Essay Contest Available
Fifth graders are encouraged to submit a personal essay for this year’s contest provided by the State Historic Preservation Office.
The theme is This Place Matters and focuses on a site or building at least 50 years old in South Dakota that is a favorite place for the student. The essay should be between 100 and 400 words, explaining why the student feels the area should be preserved.
Prizes awarded will be first place, $100; second place, $75, and third place, $50. Entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, March 13.
Each winner will also receive a signed plaque and a one-year family membership to the South Dakota State Historical Society.
The contest supports the South Dakota Archaeology and Historic Preservation month, celebrated in May.
