Enrollment for South Dakota’s Medicaid expansion officially opens on Saturday, July 1. Applications have been allowed from potential participants since Thursday, June 1.
Approximately 52,000 South Dakotans became eligible for Medicaid after voters approved Constitutional Amendment D in the November 2022 election. The amendment opened Medicaid benefits to anyone over age 18 and under 65 who earns less than $20,120 per year.
Those who have applied previously and been denied coverage are encouraged to apply again, as they may now be eligible for enrollment under the expansion.
Income guidelines vary based on household size:
- A household of one has a maximum gross monthly income of $1,677
- A household of two, $2,268
- A household of three, $2,859
- A household of four, $3,450
- A household of five, $4,042
- A household of six, $4,633
- A household of seven, $5,224
- A household of eight, $5,815
Extension recipients will have access to a health insurance benefit package that includes preventative and wellness services, outpatient care, emergency services, prescription drugs, hospitalizations, pregnancy including maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance use disorder services including behavioral health treatment, rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices, laboratory services and pediatric services including oral and vision care.

From the website, they can connect with a local navigator, a trained and certified individual who can offer free enrollment support. Navigators are required to provide fair, impartial and accurate information about health insurance options like Medicaid.
