District 4 Senate Recount Confirms Sauder Won 2024

District 4 Senate Recount Confirms Sauder Won 2024

The official recount of the votes in the District Four State Senate race was conducted in late June, but the South Dakota Secretary of State website did not reflect the correct results of the recount until late Tuesday, July 23. The results of the recount confirm that Stephanie Sauder was victorious over Fred Deutsch.

In the original results from the June 4 primary election, Sauder gained a 51 to 49 percent victory, with 1,868 votes to Deutsch’ 1,804 votes. Because the results were within two percent, the losing candidate had the option to request a recount, which he did.

The recount was conducted in mid-June with Deutsch present in each of the counties encompassing District Four last week.

The new and final numbers in this race are, Deutsch, 1,806, an increase of two votes, and Sauder, 1,869, an increase of one vote, for a total of 3,675. The spread in the recount remains Deutsch, 49 percent and Sauder, 51 percent.

In Grant County, Deutsch received 60 percent and Sauder, 39 percent; in Clark County, Deutsch, 42 percent to Sauder’s 57 percent; in Codington, Deutsch, 54 percent, Sauder, 45 percent; Deuel County, Deutsch, 62 percent, Sauder, 37 percent; Hamlin County, Deutsch, 34 percent, Sauder, 65 percent, and Roberts County, Deutsch, 50 percent, Sauder, 49 percent.
