County Commission Seeks Appointee to Fill Vacancy

Members of the Grant County Commission have begun the process to find a qualified candidate to fulfill the remainder of the term of Marty Buttke.

Buttke, who represented the residents of commission district five, died suddenly on Sunday, August 24. The term he was serving on the commission extended to the end of 2026.

Abiding by the terms of the South Dakota law 3-4-4, the commission must appoint a successor who lives within the district that Buttke served. A map of the districts is printed in a formal announcement on page two of this issue.

The board has 35 days to fill the vacancy or until the conclusion of the second regular meeting after the vacancy occurs, whichever is later. As the statement applies to the Grant County Commission, the deadline will be September 27.

Also, according to the law, because there is currently an even number of county commissioners remaining on the board, Kathy Folk, Grant County auditor, must act as a voting member of the board until an appointment is made.

Qualified residents of district five who would like to submit their names for consideration to fill the vacancy are to contact Karen Layher, Grant County administrator and commission assistant, at 605-438-5300.

LIKE SENTINALS, parking meters once lined Milbank’s Main Street. After the city added public parking lots near Main Street the town’s leadership gradually reduced reliance on the meters, and then, in 1980 voted to remove them.
