Communities Host Programs to Honor Fallen on Memorial Day

Memorial Day is Monday, May 30, and several local communities will conduct programs to honor the deceased veterans for whom the holiday was established.
There will be two programs in Milbank: one at St. Lawrence Cemetery and one at the Milbank City Cemetery. The public can attend the 8 a.m. Mass at the St. Lawrence Cemetery with Fr. Gary DeRouchey delivering an address at 9 a.m. There will be posting of memorial wreaths and a salute to the dead by the Grant County VFW Firing Squad.
The program at the Milbank City Cemetery will begin at 10 a.m. with the posting of the colors by several military organizations and their auxiliaries. Preston Fischer, VFW commander, will lead the program with the Pledge of Allegiance. Tom Lombard will be the featured speaker for the program. Memorial wreaths will be placed, and the VFW Firing Squad will perform a salute to the dead. The eighth-grade band will perform the Star-Spangled Banner and other patriotic numbers.
In case of inclement weather, the 10 a.m. service will move inside the Milbank High School armory.
Those who would like to attend the service in Big Stone City will need to be at the St. Charles Catholic Church before the 10 a.m. start. Immediately after that service, the action moves to the Mound Cemetery and then to Veterans Park. The service is under the direction of the Big Stone American Legion and Auxiliary.
The members of the Stockholm-Strandburg American Legion Post 171 and Auxiliary will conduct services at the LaBolt Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. After that, they will lead a short program at Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg. Outdoor activities will follow.
The members of the Revillo American Legion Harry Talbert Post 104 and Auxiliary will perform the laying of wreaths at 9 a.m. in the Revillo Cemetery. In case of rain, the laying of wreaths will be inside the community center. From the cemetery, the service will move to the community center for a short program marking the 100th anniversary of the auxiliary. There will also be a lunch, including rolls and beverages.
