Bulldog Football Team Earns First Home Win of Season over Wahpeton

THE BULLDOG DEFENSE was stifling in its 29-14 victory over Wahpeton, ND, on Friday, August 28, in Milbank. Bulldog Football Team Earns First Home Win of Season over Wahpeton

 

 

 

The Milbank Area Bulldog football team cruised past Wahpeton, ND, 29-14 on Friday, August 28, in the team’s first home game of the season in Milbank. The Bulldogs advance to 2-0 overall.
“It was a good team win. Our guys prepared and played hard all week,” said Brian Allmendinger, coach. “We faced a little momentum shift in the second half when Wahpeton scored two unanswered touchdowns. The guys stayed with it and came back with a strong fourth quarter scoring one touchdown to close out the game.”
Marshall Voeltz had a strong run to the 15-yard line to set up Bennett Schwenn’s 15-yard touchdown (TD) run in the opening quarter. Voeltz’s two-point conversion run was good, and Milbank led 8-0 with 7:43 left in the quarter.
A solid run from Voeltz to the 10-yard line set up quarterback (QB) Kaden Krause’s 10-yard TD dash. The extra point kick was good, and Milbank enjoyed a 15-0 first quarter advantage. The Milbank defense was stifling in the opening quarter, as they forced the opponent to punt once.
Sawyer Gauer broke up a fourth-down pass attempt, and the Bulldog offense took over on downs early in the second quarter. Krause kept the ball on a run for a huge gain to set up first and goal with 7:50 left. Voeltz scrambled into the end-zone on a four-yard TD run, and Krause’s two-point conversion run was good. The ‘Dawgs enjoyed a 23-0 halftime advantage as the defense shut down their opponent’s drives.
Wahpeton came out of halftime with a big play and score, with a successful two-point conversion to close the gap to 23-8.
Wahpeton found the end-zone on a 14-yard pass in the fourth quarter, but failed the two-point conversion for a 23-14 game. Gauer closed the scoring out with an eight-yard TD run for the 29-14 final. The two-point conversion failed.
Milbank tallied 275 yards on the ground. Krause had 115 yards on 15 carries and one TD. Voeltz carried the ball 27 times for 103 yards and a TD. Schwenn had two carries for 20 yards and a TD; Gauer, three for 19 yards and a TD, and Karson Weber, one for 18 yards.
The ‘Dawgs had 15 yards through the air. Krause was two of four attempts, and Carter Bowsher caught two passes for 15 yards.
Defensively, Milbank was led by Gauer, Weber and Justus Osborn, who had three tackles each. Voeltz, Maddox Hanson and I. Korstjens had two tackles each. Hanson recorded two tackles for a loss of yardage, and Isaac Schulte, one sack and a fumble recovery. Weber also snagged an interception.
