Begin Catholic Schools Week

Families and staff of St. Lawrence School are gearing up for the annual National Catholic Schools Week activities. The local week-long celebration will begin Saturday, January 30, and continue through Friday, February 5.
The local theme is SonQuest Rainforest, and the fun begins on Saturday with a 5 p.m. mass. Students in kindergarten through the sixth grade will sit with their teachers. A meal at 6 p.m. will feature barbecues, hotdogs, chips and bars. Ten games of bingo will be played beginning at 7 p.m.
The celebration continues on Monday, February 1, with Farmer or Gardener day. Students will learn about the parable of the sower and ask themselves which kind of soil they are.
Camouflage day will be the theme for Tuesday, February 2. The students will be challenged to “get found” as they explore the parable of the lost sheep. Tuesday is also soup day. The students invite parish members and community members to join them for a steaming bowl of soup between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Catholic Schools Week kicks into overdrive on Wednesday, February 3, as the students don their hats and sunglasses for Rainforest Excursion Day. They will set out to “get God’s love” as they study the parable of the good Samaritan.
Spirit day and the idea to “get praying” go hand-in-hand with the activities for Thursday, February 4. Students are to wear their blue shirts and khaki pants. The focus for the day will be the parable of the friend at midnight. At 8:30 a.m., the students will celebrate an all-school mass with Bishop DeGrood.
The students will learn about the concept of “use it or lose it” as they study the parable of the talents on Friday, February 5. Students are encouraged to take pajamas (PJs) to school and change into them after Mass. The Mass is from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., with sixth-grade students in charge of the liturgical duties.
Also, on February 5, the fifth-grade students will perform a band concert in the gym from 9:30 to 9:45 a.m. Students will enjoy a movie from 12:20 to 2 p.m. plus drinks, snacks and items to lay on in the gym. Catholic Schools Week songs and actions will be from 2:20 to 2:50 p.m.
